How the component works, which specifications matter and what to watch for when choosing. From the basics to the details real bike nerds care about.
Lower weight helps on climbs and repeated accelerations. For flat rides, commuting and carrying loads, comfort, durability and aerodynamics often matter more than a few grams. Frame, wheelset and complete-bike weights are not directly comparable.
Deeper rims can help on fast, flat rides but react more to crosswinds. Shallower rims often suit lighter riders, climbing and variable winds. Mid-depth is an all-round compromise; depth alone does not determine speed.
Internal width affects tyre shape and mounted width. More support can suit wider gravel tyres; a narrow road tyre does not automatically fit a wide rim. External width affects aerodynamics. Always check the approved tyre/rim pairing.
A supple, lightly treaded tyre suits fast tarmac miles; loose terrain needs more grip and volume. Tubeless or hookless labels are compatibility requirements, not styling choices. Width, model, pressure and frame clearance must all agree.
The value "8.6 bar / 125 psi" is not a recommendation to inflate your tire this hard. You use the lowest applicable limit of the rim and the exact tire model. Using an inner tube does not increase the permitted pressure of a hookless combination.
Spoke material, count and construction affect stiffness, weight and servicing. Low weight may matter in racing; rough routes and everyday use also demand durability and repairability. Spoke count alone is not a quality measure.
Axle diameter, spacing and wheel size must match frame and fork. This is not a free performance choice. Upgrades need approved interfaces; cargo wheel sizes cannot simply be replaced by road wheels.
