Motor position and system affect ride feel, servicing and loaded starts. For everyday transport, dependable assistance and service often matter more than peak figures. Range depends on load, route, weather and assistance mode.
Electronic shifting offers light, consistent operation but needs charged batteries. Mechanical shifting needs no charging and often suits tighter budgets. On gravel, chain control and the right derailleur also matter; choose a coherent package.
Axle diameter, spacing and wheel size must match frame and fork. This is not a free performance choice. Upgrades need approved interfaces; cargo wheel sizes cannot simply be replaced by road wheels.
Material affects weight, stiffness, maintenance and use, but construction matters just as much. Do not choose on a carbon or metal label alone. Racers prioritise weight and response; everyday riders durability, protection and upkeep.
More clearance gives options for comfort, grip and rough surfaces. Choose a supple road tyre for smooth tarmac, or more volume and suitable tread for gravel. Mounted width also depends on the rim; Thomas checks the combination and safe clearance.
More mounts or carrying space help bikepacking and everyday transport. Compactness and low weight may matter more on short sporting rides. Check exact mounts and load limits; a mount does not make every bag or rack compatible.
The stated maximum applies only under manufacturer conditions. Check whether it means luggage or total weight including bike and rider. For children, shopping or touring, mounting, weight distribution and brakes matter too; do not add accessory limits together.
Lower weight helps on climbs and repeated accelerations. For flat rides, commuting and carrying loads, comfort, durability and aerodynamics often matter more than a few grams. Frame, wheelset and complete-bike weights are not directly comparable.
